Earlier this year I participated in a really fun & interesting study guessing a dog’s breed or mix just from his appearance. The study, Dog Breed Identification: What kind of dog is that? was conducted by Julie Levy, DVM, PhD & made possible by the National Canine Research Foundation.
The study asked more than 5,000 dog experts to determine “What kind of dog is that?” based on little information. Participants were shown 2 photos (portrait & profile), a given the height, weight, & age for 100 dogs.
The results are finally here. I have to admit, the task was a challenging one! I’m not sure where my personal predictions landed but the results will show that the experts were 100% correct 0 times. What does this mean?
There are many reasons people like to know a dog’s line. For some, it is as silly & simple as playing a fun, little guessing game. For others, it is a serious question with the answer telling the dog’s personality & temperament.
Although it seems the results are undesirable, with dog experts failing to correctly identify the dogs, the results have given me great relief. We can put a spin on an old saying to explain the positive side of these results: Don’t judge a pup by his color.
And just for fun, here are a few from the study for you to try!

Think you can’t afford to spay or neuter your feline friends? I have some news that’ll make you throw that idea out the window!
I’m very excited to share some awesome info with my lovely cat-doting readers: The Animal Shelter Alliance of Portland hosts Spay & Save, a low-cost spay & neuter program! The cost may be as low as $10. For those outside of the qualifying window, there are other low-cost options.
All surgeries are performed by experienced & licensed veterinarians. Expect to drop your pet off early morning & pick her up later that same day.
For more information, visit their website & see their flyer. And please feel free to re-post the flyer & spread the word!

In my experience as a pet sitter, I’ve found that pets take after their people. That’s why I’m so darn lucky to have such amazing, sweet, talented, & eccentric clients. It means I’ll be spending my time with their equally magnificent furry family.
This story focuses on one of my clients’ very special kittens named Loki and formerly named Orion (although that’s an almost unbelievable story for a different post). Maybe, like me, you’ve heard the myth that cats can actually be potty trained to use the toilet. Maybe, like me, you’ve fantasized that this magic could somehow be real & that you could eliminate the litter from your life forever (amen)!!! Cat pee & poo away with one downward press of a lever? But how could it be true? And if it were, how do these crazy people train their cats to do something so desperately needed in every cat lovers household?
Well, folks, behold! Consider this myth busted.

Cornbread happened upon us. He did! Ok, so I have been wanting a new boy kitten. But despite my obsession with rescue animals, I sometimes do other things & am not constantly seeking them out. This chilly November night, I happened to be walking to a bar in my little neighborhood. Cornbread happened to be snuggled in a passer-by’s shirt. This passer-by also happened to be looking for a home for the little kitty he plucked from a free box.
The pint sized guy was so fluffy, so sweet, so cold, and so cuddly. How could I say no?
All you pit bull haters beware, the photos below are dangerous & may make you eat your foot.
Undoubtedly, the hardest thing about being a pet owner is knowing the end will one day come. Here, one family shares their special experience.
